A new startup IT company has come up with a novel new way of making money on the internet - to use software to listen to internet calls, and then display ads on the computer screen related to whatever the net user was talking about. For example if you were talking to somebody else on the internet about going out for dinner, advertisements would pop up on your screen about local restaurants and restaurant review sites. If you were wondering about getting some computer software, advertisements would appear on your screen for computer stores in the area.
This new idea, of course, while coming as an improvement on Google’s G-mail, which shows ads based on scanning of G-mail users’ email, also raises some very pertinent what-ifs. What if you were having some intimate conversation with somebody whom you were not supposed to be having a conversation of this nature in the first place, and all of a sudden ads appeared on your screen suggesting hotels with the best short-term rates? What if somebody who wasn’t supposed to hear this clandestine conversation passed by and saw the suggestions on screen (just when you thought you had signed off!)? What if (oh horror of horrors) the conversation was recorded? And this despite the chief honcho of this company (Puddingmedia) making reassuring noises that this would not happen?
Are we getting somewhat paranoid?
