Purple Tomato - Good For Cancer Prevention

Purple Tomato - Good For Cancer Prevention

Researchers have noted that feeding purple tomatoes to laboratory mice which had a genetic defect predisposing them to a higher chance of cancer actually prolonged their lifespan.

This findings were published in Nature Biotechnology.

The modified tomatoes were created by introducing 2 genes (Delila and Rosea1) from the snapdragon flower into the tomato plant.  The two genes were responsible for the production of anthocyanins which were very good antioxidants.  Anthocyanins gave the tomato the purple color.  When these purple tomatoes were fed to lab mice lacking the p53 gene (a gene which helps protect against cancer), it was found that the mice survived longer than another group which were fed a normal diet.

Now all we need to do is find some purple tomatoes in our local supermart.
